Greg vs. Me: To the death!
August 22, 2007
With the introduction of Player vs. Player (PvP) gameplay in Dungeon Runners, we absolutely had to kill each other. It was foreordained, written in blood into Marketing Guy Greg’s employee handbook the day he got here. Therefore, when Tuesday, August 21 came and Chunk #1 hit the Public Test Server (PTS), Death rode along with it.
Death for Greg that is.
Since Greg was a typical marketing manager, he didn’t have a whole lot of experience actually playing the game (or, at least, maybe he kept “re-rolling” his character). I, on the other hand, had a rather nifty mid-level ranger/mage combo going on. We decided to make the contest as even as possible, so he could keep his second-level warrior while I made a new ranger (with the brand-new multiple character slots featured in Chunk #1). I’d be at a slight disadvantage… theoretically. This is Greg we’re talking about here.
We met in Pwnston and queued up for a one-on-one battle. After the thirty-second timer, the match promptly started and Greg promptly met my first Poison Shot. Turning green, he still approached, absorbing crossbow bolts like a straw dummy. When he finally got into melee range, Greg took a few feeble swipes with his sword, then finally remembered to use Butcher and knocked me back.
Was that a drop of perspiration on my brow? Actually, I think the ceiling tile was leaking above me. A quick calculation showed that I’d have trouble killing four of Greg at once, so one Greg wasn’t really a problem. After a couple more shots, I hit Greg with a massive cloud of poisonous gas and he went down like a rag doll.
Suffice it to say Greg didn’t put up much of a fight the second, third or fourth times he died either. My health was low, and being near his spawn and not one to run away from a typically unfair (that is, unfair to my opponent) fight, I attacked him anyway and, alas, I fell in battle. The seven-minute round was nearly over anyway (we spent a lot of time running around) so I granted Greg this one boon.
I wanted to get into some group fights but there weren’t enough level one’s running around. Maybe tomorrow!
